DIY: Probiotic Rose Coconut Cleanser

Here at cocokind, we research the best superfood ingredients in the world and discover how we can bring them into our skincare routines. Enter: our newest obsession, our do-it-yourself Probiotic Rose Coconut Cleanser!

Now, probiotics are already known to be crucial to food digestion, nutrient absorption, and the removal of toxins and bad bacteria in our gut. What about for our skin? Are there any benefits when we apply probiotics topically?

YES. After studying all about the potential benefits, we created our own cleanser/mask recipe and tried it for seven consecutive days.

The results?

*Decreased redness

*Smaller pores

*Smooth/soft skin

*Faded acne scars

*Less puffiness around eyes

Indeed, probiotics have been found to boost collagen production and oxygen absorption when applied to skin, promoting natural skin regeneration and recovery. This helps to reduce damage from dry skin (like fine lines) and help maintain clear skin. For those of us battling acne and acne scars, probiotics can help kill bad bacteria, reduce inflammation, and gently exfoliate-away our dead skin.

**The only downfall is that the shelf life is short – our recipe lasts for 5-7 days max. Additionally, the cleanser has to be refrigerated. BUT, the good news is that this recipe is COMPLETELY EDIBLE, and makes for the most delicious dairy-free, rose-y, coconut-y, yogurt. Between applying this topically and eating it, we had no problem finishing the whole dang thing in one week!

Let’s get started!

What you need:

-2 cans organic coconut milk (do not get the light version, that’s just the watered down version of the real thing!)

-1 packet (5 grams) of a non-dairy yogurt starter kit (I got this version, which comes with four packets, from my local natural grocery store)

-10 sprays of Cocokind Organic Rosewater Toner (Check it out here. It only has one ingredient, as it should be!)

-Clean mason jar or container with lid

That’s it!

Instructions:

Leave your coconut milk in the refrigerator for a couple hours so the milk hardens. When it is hardened, flip the can upside down and remove the lid. Strain out all the milk water (you can use this for smoothies), and only keep the hardened coconut milk for this recipe.

Scoop out all the milk from the two cans into a container and stir so it is all the same consistency. Add in one serving of the yogurt starter kit, which should be around 4-5 grams. Lastly, spray our Organic Rosewater Toner 10 times into the mixture. Gently stir all three ingredients!

Once the ingredients have been added, put the lid on your container and leave in your oven with the light on for 24 hours. DO NOT turn the oven on (and make sure nobody else in your household does either)! After 24 hours, you should see that the yogurt has thickened and some of the yogurt is sticking to the sides of your container. Then, place the container in the refrigerator for five hours. Mission accomplished!

Note: There are many different ways to make homemade yogurt! I have tried a couple different recipes and this was the easiest/most reliable (aka minimal opportunities to mess up) version for me. Of course, if you have less time, you can substitute homemade yogurt with dairy-free yogurt from the store…just make sure it has a super clean ingredients list!

Directions for AM Cleansing:

I put my probiotic cleanser in a smaller, separate jar. Take around 1/2 tablespoon into your hands. Massage the probiotic into your skin for at least one minute, then rinse off with warm water. I used it as a MORNING cleanser for a week, and on some days when I had more time, I applied it as a face mask (leaving it on for 10 minutes). Note that this cleanser will not remove makeup well, so at night, I used our Organic Facial Cleansing Oil or Organic Sea Moss Exfoliator as I normally do.

Directions for Eating:

Spoon + bowl + berry toppings = The yummiest rose-coconut flavored yogurt ever!
