Why We’ll Never Use a Water-Based Moisturizer Again

For a lot of people, the use of oil in ordinary skincare routine is a scary concept. While it seems counter-intuitive to add more oil to the skin (especially for us oily gals!), water-based skincare and oil-free moisturizers can sometimes cause further imbalance of our skin. Today, we’re breaking down, simply, exactly why we love oil-FULL skincare.

Why is oil produced in the first place?

The oils our skin naturally produces plus added oil moisturizers provide vital moisture and balance. Without the right levels of hydration, the skin can’t effectively protect against environmental stressors, such as bacteria and UV rays. As with all types of cells, moisture is also needed to maintain the health and function of epidermal cells. But if our skin lacks moisture, excess oil is produced to balance it out!

How does oil impact our skin?

The fatty acids and natural oils, once added to the skin, indicate proper levels of moisture. Essentially, the levels of our skin communicate that they’re properly hydrated and protected. Since the sebaceous gland doesn’t have to overcompensate for lost moisture, the skin stops the overproduction of sebum. This leads to a reduction in  oil production, as well as potentially clogged pores. As a result, the skin can proceed with natural renewal. This process includes cell turnover, or the movement of new skin cells from the lowest layer to the surface layer of the skin. When dead skin cells are constantly shed, it allows space for fresh, youthful skin!

Benefits of Oil Based Skincare?

Unlike water-based products, oils maintain the natural pH level of our skin and do not disturb this balance. Our ideal pH level is 5-6 (slightly acidic), but harsh cleansers can strip our natural oils, which increases the skin’s pH to over 7. This alkalization not only disrupts our crucial acid mantle, but also leaves the skin vulnerable to environmental factors. Fortunately for us, there is another option!

Most natural oils not only draw out impurities but are also full of antioxidants and vitamins. Sacha Inchi oil, a central component of our Golden Elixir, is particularly rich in omega-3s and omega-6s, and vitamins A and E, which lessen skin stress and inflammation. Coconut oil, which is blended with avocado oil and rosehip oil in our Organic Facial Repair Serum, is filled with antioxidants and essential fatty acids that protect your skin.

What about dry or acne-prone skin types?

Oils benefits not only oily skin types, but also dry and acne-prone skin. In comparison to water-based moisturizers, oils are more hydrating, effective, and have longer wear on the skin. So, if you’re someone who finds ordinary moisturizers to be insufficient, oils are ideal for you! But you probably already know that!

If you’re someone who suffers from acne, oils are also an effective option. Apart from drawing impurities from the skin, natural oils can speed up cell turnover. This can help heal recent breakouts, as well as lessen the appearance of scars. Essential oils, such as tea tree and lavender are also skincare saviors. With anti-inflammatory and soothing qualities, these oils effectively kill bacteria without drying or stressing the skin.

For those that are new to oils, the best way to experiment with oils is to try a light, easy to absorb formula (we recommend our Golden Elixir which can be used on the face, body, and hair). For an introduction on how to slowly introduce oils to your everyday regimen, refer to our simple guide!
